3.1 around Furman. Was going to do a workout but legs were sore and my hip was hurting. Excuses.

Many of the old trees around Furman were knocked down during the microburst on Thursday night. Several on the mall and at least 10 around the lake. Looked like a tornado went through.

2 miles of walking around University of New Hampshire after a 5 hour drive and 3 hours of unpacking all of my worldly possessions. Probably didn't offset the massive piece of haddock and frozen yogurt I ate for dinner, but I'm ok with that. Back to training tomorrow.

Had every intention to put up the map of my first NH run. Forgot my watch antenna back at my apartment and I'm spending the night at the hotel on campus with my parents.

Drove up to Madbury town hall (about 10min from my apt) and started exploring their extensive trail network with my college friend who's from NH (see below). We did about 5.5 miles of trail and the rest on road between trailheads. You could probably do about 10-12 miles without doubling back but we didn't have much direction and just did one small corner of the park. The coolest part is it's all owned by the university and theres some huge farms where you can just run through fields. The trails were well groomed with lots of granite everywhere. Everything from small rocks on the trail to giant boulders and granite rock walls from the 16-1700s. Weather has been highs of mid 70s climbing to an almost unbearable 76 today at 4. So it was a late summer run with shirts on.

So I have a friend from NH, also named Justin (we ran track together in college), and he rode up here with me and my parents. We learned that his parents had no idea that he was coming after we had driven most of the way up. I dropped him off at his house and his parents weren't home, but he said that he could just break in. I told him to call his parents so he didn't get shot but he said he'd be ok. Not long after I left his parents came home and noticed their front door standing wide open. His dad told his mom to stay in the car and he grabbed a shovel and went in looking for the intruder. This is almost exactly the scenario that I told him would play out. Luckily, his dad didn't hit him with a shovel and they were super excited to see him.

Now that I'm mostly moved in, my schedule should open up a little and I'll get some longer runs in. Picked out a route today that I may try to run-commute on. We'll see.

Easy AM run from my apartment. Couldn't go far since I had to go pick my parents up from their hotel.

PM- Medium long run as a loop around Durham.

Map:

You may have been exposed to the game "what happens when Justin finds your camera." Today there was a twist. It was "what happens when Justin finds his camera and runs with it." Pictures ensued:

View of the fields across the street from my house.

A river about a half mile up the street. There were kayakers that I didn't get in the picture.

Packard Falls. Just up the street from here.

Another picture of Packard Falls.

What I'd consider to be a typical trail in Durham. Notice all the granite stones and nice wide groomed trail.

The dam holding back the drinking water reservoir for UNH. This was on campus.

Picture of school from the very back corner. There's a ton of construction going on back there. I guess that's always a good sign.

The baseball field with the football stadium/outdoor track in the background. I didn't get any more pictures of the school since I have this fear of people seeing me with a camera while running. After the run, I met the neighbors and hung out on their maple syrup farm (see top photo).

I'm off to cook some chick lobstahs now. I'll let you know how they turn out.

Went up to the Waste Management park with Justin. Its a pretty cool strip of land next to a river that the dump bought and maintains. Rained like mad all day.

AM- 3mi in the verratas around the neighborhood.

PM- 9 mi with Justin and Eric who runs for UNH. Hopefully will get some runs in with Eric on the weekends this semester. Discovered SO MANY MORE TRAILS today. I'm blown away with how many quality trails there are in my running circumference. And I haven't even really run on the main trail system in town.

AM- 5 mi. Headed out Longmarsh Rd like I did yesterday morning but instead of turning around at 1.5 I went on out the gravel road and found ANOTHER TRAIL HEAD. There's a 4 mi trail that goes out to great bay and several smaller trails that split off along the way. I accidentally took a split and ran around a giant glacial bog thing. Wasn't too grown up and only saw one spiderweb. On the way back I read the signs at the trailhead and learned that in the 70s an oil company tried to build the world's largest oil refinery there but the town won and protected all the land. All this is a mile and a half from my door.

The plan is to do another 10 this afternoon with Justin Eric and more college runners. I'm sure I'll feel old and out of shape but at least we'll see some more NEW TRAILS.

PM- 12 miles with Justin, Eric and some of their high school friends who all currently run D1 cross country. The pace was quick but I didn't suffer too much. We ran some more new trails. This time was on the main trail system on campus and down around the railroad tracks. Came home completely depleted and drank 2 giant glasses of milk and ate the rest of my stir fry. Now I feel sick and I need to get groceries.

Ran from the house to the Great Bay and back. It was super muggy and buggy and I just felt plain old terrible. Good bonk run I suppose with some great views that I couldn't enjoy because of the mosquitos.

AM- 3mi Easy run to the end of my street and back. Saw 2 other runners along the way.

PM-  5mi Spent the day studying for the placement exams I have to take next week and I just got to the point where I couldn't focus. Time for a run. Ended up at the Madbury, NH trail system about a 5min drive from the house. The trails are maddeningly confusing and even though I've been there twice, I spent the entire time lost. That's not a bad thing though since I ended up running through some awesome fields and trails. Somewhere around 30 min I was just completely drained. Ran into a couple of big friendly labs and that picked me up enough to get back to the car. I'm pretty sure I'm overreaching at the moment with all the exploring miles at faster than average pace. That and I haven't slept a full night in a couple of weeks. Still torn on racing this weekend even though every bit of common sense says its a terrible idea.

13.000.000.000.000.000.000.0013.00

Strange but good run today. Ran 5mi on some trails that I sort of knew around school, then got in the car to head home. I noticed that Eric (new NH running friend) had texted me to see if I wanted to run and I said sure I'd do another half hour or so. So we met at my house about 30min after I finished my first run and set off and immediately started bushwhacking to find new trails. Some were successful, some weren't. This went on for about and hour and 15 min. The pace was much slower today than it has been and we did a lot of walking so I was fine with the extra distance. Now I'll start my 2 day taper and *probably* show up for the Hampshire 100k on Sunday.

Super awesome bonus from today's run: Connected my back yard to the main trail system at school with zero roads. Now that I know the way, its not much bushwhacking either.

Second super awesome fun fact: I saw a sign in the next town south of here that they're showing "Dr. Strangelove: Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb" and "Doctor Who" at the town center this weekend. One of my favorite movies followed by one of my favorite TV shows.

Showed up to the Hampshire 100k knowing I probably wouldn't run the whole thing. After I registered I found out I'd be starting grad school the next day. I decided the night before that unless I somehow could get a top 3 I'd drop about halfway. It started off about as bad as a first annual ultra could. There were barriers up across the trail about 100m after the start, there were several trail junctions with no signage in the first 16 mi... But after the runner and bikers converged it was pretty great.

As soon as we started some guy tore off and left two a group of 5 of us in the dust. It was me, an old guy, a young guy and 2 middle age PI runners. I let that group go after about 20 minutes but quickly caught them we they got off course. Lost them again around an hour in and spend the next hour and a half completely alone. At mile 16 I was caught by another runner and we stayed together for a bit but he left me on a hill. But we joined the bike course here and at least I saw people.

At the aid station at mile 25 I pulled out my map and realized the next place to drop was at mile 40. So I walked over to the table, grabbed a cup of Sam Adams Octoberfest (dunno why there was beer that early in the course) and I waited on the drop out wagon to take me back to the car. When I dropped I was in 7th place. About 30 min behind the leader and about 30 min ahead of 8th.

All in all, it was a good long run. Nothing less, nothing more.

Mountain biked for an hour.

First day of grad school: I've never felt so inadequate as I did when I finished my placement exams. I definitely didn't test out of the lower lever grad courses, but I didn't really expect to. 5 years is a long time to go without seeing a subject.

After my impromptu recovery week I finally managed to get out of the door and explore some more trails. I was extremely sore and tired and felt off the entire time.

Last week was my orientation week for my new "job" as a lab instructor. I'll be teaching 2 section of General Chemistry labs. Somewhat scary proposition but some awesome coworkers made the week enjoyable. Also had some placement exams in sections of chemistry that I haven't seen in 6 years or so. That was the stressful part the precluded running. Good news though: I *almost* passed all of them. In other words I failed all of them, but that's not uncommon and showed the professors that I was at about the same level as someone who just finished undergrad.

This week I start course work in advanced organic chem, spectroscopic determination, and advanced inorganic. Been looking forward to these for a while now.
